When packing for a trip to the hospital to have a baby I am reminded of an episode of the Sit-com Mad About You when the two main characters are packing their bag to take to the hospital when they were expecting their baby. The woman pulls from the man's overnight bag a very large novel. She confusingly asks, "What's this for?" The man stumbles over his words a bit and then says something like,
"Well, you know,
in case there is a lull."
(Lull: A period of lessened activity.)
The woman is not amuzed and assures him that there will be no lull.
"I'll swing by and check on you
during my lunch break."
Humor makes everything more manageable. The Labor Shirt: A few weeks ago Brent asked me what I wanted him to wear. I knew immediately what he meant. When I'm in the hospital having a baby, he has to be wearing just the right shirt. You know, some are just more attractive. As you can see though, I'm pretty much choosing between this plaid one or that one. (Not much variety in his wardrobe.)
My emotions about the day are all over the place. So excited to meet our little girl, yet scared to death at the unknown and scary moments that labor can sometimes bring.
Plan for the day:
6:00 a.m. Call the beautiful Labor and Delivery nurses to check if there is a room open for me. (And if they say no throw a fit.)
7:00 a.m. Arrive at the hospital and hope for room #7. (I've been in there for three of my children's births so far.)
7:01 a.m Request the epidural man come visit me.
9:30 a.m Probably see the Dr. for the first time. (I guess this is where the lull might happen.)
1:30 p.m. Have a baby. Snuggle, smooch and sigh . Rest up.
5:30 p.m Dial my favorite phone numbers *5151. (Food ordering number. I love this feature.)
8:00 Watch American Idol
I cannot wait to share her first pictures with you. We are blessed. There have been so many sweet phone calls, e-mails and kind wishes. Thank you.
