The second my kids hear the clanking of a metal bowl, the whirring of the mixer or the turning of a recipe book page, they're there. From upstairs I hear,
"Mom, can I help."
"No, I asked first."
Its a pushing and shoving match to try and get the prime position by my side. Every stool is dragged over, aprons are flying and suds everywhere. (They know whoever is there first with washed hands gets the first job.)
Its a pushing and shoving match to try and get the prime position by my side. Every stool is dragged over, aprons are flying and suds everywhere. (They know whoever is there first with washed hands gets the first job.)
I want them to learn some kitchen skills. If you've read my blog before you know my girls are well on their way. But you know it takes more patience and dishes to let my kids help.
My first response is usually throwing up my arms and saying, "Ok, I'll leave you guys to it."
But my motherly side, the side that wants Dallin to learn some mission survival skills and Cameron to feel proud of his cookies he helps me make, takes over and I have to come up with numerous jobs. Someone takes the butter out of the wrapper, someone cracks eggs, someone measures flour, someone works the mixer.
My job: making sure no foreign objects get into the mixer and clean up.
So as fascinated as my kids are with cooking, it's no surprise that a wheat grinder had them in awe. 45 min. Later we had enough wheat to make our Healthy Wholewheat pancakes. You grind a fourth of a cup, I grind a forth of a cup."He got three turns of the handle more than me."

Here's our recipe for Healthy Wholewheat Pancakes from A Collection of Favorite Ivory Family Recipes cookbook. (50% of sales of this book go towards the Make-a-wish foundation.)

Healthy Wholewheat Pancakes
1 c. wholewheat flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 T. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. milk
1 egg
2 T. vegetable oil

The finished product:

Atleast they want to help! I think it's great! Those pancakes look yummy!
I didn't know you had a blog!!! What a small world.
if you email me your address. i will email you an invite to my blog:)
Oh this Donna Bagley ( Ryan's wife)
my email address is donnajbagley@gmail.com
You are such a good mom letting them help. They are going to be fantastic cooks by the time you are finished with them!
Deb. This is once again adorable. Mattie was telling me all about the wheat grinding. It was very impressive. The boys look like they are having a blast. Those hand grinders are killers but nice to have around. Do you have an electric one? Borrow mine sometime.
You get it way faster that 45 min.
Those pancakes are one of my favs for homemade anyways. I'll stick to the IHOP Grain and nut ones. Yummers. We both agree on that one huh. We should go out for a pancake girl night out sometime. Great that your teaching kitchen skills to the boys as well. My boys had no interest until later in life. I love when men cook.
I love this post because that is what happens at my house everytime I grad the recipe book, too. Everyone wants to help. Thanks for the recipe. Sounds yummy. Will definately try.
Wow! you are ambitious! What a fun experience for the kids. Looks like the pancakes turned out great. Yum.
I feel the same way. I WANT them to help but it makes things so much harder. Good for you for doing the right thing!
For our wedding someone gave us a ton of wheat and a recipe for wheat pancakes, but we dont have a grinder...maybe you could send a couple of your kids down to grind it for us? Thanks.
I have the same issues here. I want to let them help, but man I can sure get it done faster and in a much cleaner way if they don't.
Then I realize that I'm really doing them a disservice by not letting them help, so I let 'em in. Even though it takes WAY longer, it definitely makes for some happy kiddos!
Loved the pictures of your kids grinding away. I need to get a hand wheat grinder.
That was adorable! Makes me appreciate the one little helper I had today, but we just made boxed brownies! I can't imagine having that much "help"!
Those look yummy! Colby loves to cook as well. I think it is good for them. Too many cooks in the kitchen might be a little hard to deal with though.
What an awesome mom you are. That looks like fun---well at least from a kids point of view!
Hey--are you and I the only excited ones about Idol last night. Do you think it helped Jason out that I voted for an hour straight Tuesday night? Anyway, He is such a cutie and I don't care what anyone else says he is so fun to watch. I just like his happy easy going demeanor. Have you noticed no matter what the judges say to him he just laughs. His shyness reminds me of my little missionary boy. Anyway--Jan always talks about her "two friends" that just love Jason--like we need to stay anonymous--I'm not ashamed of it are you? Jera S.
I'm with you! It goes much faster and way more organized w/o the mob there to help. But then te kitchen is where I have learned a lot of patience with my kiddies!
Yummy, sounds like cooking at my house with a two year old and a baby in hand.
I know what you mean! Having the kids help makes the chore take so much longer, but it is good for them, I know.
You are raising boys that will be wonderful husbands one day!
That sounds like my house. Tyler doesn't really help much, cuz he's usually at school. But Porter, he's all about moving the stool wanting to put everything in and make a BIG mess. Sydnee has always been my helper too! Fun times. I love the pictures!
I always feel like a bad Mom when my kids ask to help cook and I say "no." Patience is not my strong point and it's so much easier (and less messy) to just do it myself. I'm working on this though! I have always wanted to try whole wheat pancakes, thanks for the recipe!
Hey Jera, I'm answering your quesion from yesterday. Yes, we are the secret friends who love Jason. There are some pretty strong opinions about him though. I have a feeling that if I were asked to speak in front of 65 million people that I'd be a little awkward too. As far as his voice goes, I love his sound. I don't think he'll win because he is up against some great talent, but I'm enjoying his singing now. I told Jan that I'm going to download his songs when he's booted off. Oh, and fabulous job on the voting, I'm embarrassed to say that I don't vote. Kenley voted for me once.
Lisa has the patience to cook with the girls. I do too. For about 3 minutes.
