Notes from General Conference

I am so grateful that I have never felt as though I missed out on ANYTHING by staying at home with my children. I really appreciated Elder Ballard's talk from the Sunday afternoon session of General Conference. I love my job and I would not trade it for anything, but sometimes it gets a little
"challenging and frustrating."
I will take to heart his suggestions to:
1. Cherish the shining moments. There have been a few excellent posts about his lately and I need to remember to enjoy the here and now, but keep an eye to the future to work on my long term goals.
2. Don't overschedule and make sure there is time for unstructured play time. I have been reading a book called, "Last Child in the Woods." The author says that kids need to be outdoors. Participating in sports and such doesn't count. Kids need to explore, get their hands dirty and use their imaginations. One of my most favorite things is seeing my kids dig holes, tie strings on their bikes to pull someone on a skateboard behind, collect rocks and bugs, etc..
3. "Water cannot be drawn from an empty well." I believe that this new interest of mine, blogging, has given me a chance to express myself and create a journal of my thoughts and feelings.
4. Pray, Study and Teach. My Book of Mormon reading and note taking goal that I set earlier this year is helping me to feel better about every aspect of my life. As I pray to know and study to learn, I am better equipped to teach.
I may never finish my Elementary Education degree I started at BYU, but I can use the skills I did gain to help my family.
It might be a long time until I gain a great understanding of the gospel, but I know it's true and I can share that light with others, especially my family.
I might not always succeed, but I'll give my whole heart to this job called MOTHERHOOD.

Debie, it looks fantastic in here. How do you do what you do? Or is it Brent? Help. I love this talk and I think it is totally wonderful that we both felt the same. It was a great weekend with basically Mattie and I. We watched it all and loved it all. I feel we learned a ton. It was a conference for the world and not just the members. Were blessed.

Conference is a such a happy, enlightening time. I appreciated this talk as well. The children loved it too. Especially the part about them picking up their toys. They felt like someone took the time to "talk" to them, even if they would have rather heard something like "let mom pick up your toys". Ha!

I enjoyed Elder Bednar's talk, and I felt uplifted with Elder Ballard's talk too! What a great weekend, and this was a good post! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Debie, I don't often comment on these sites, but I do enjoying going to them. You are a perfect example of the way a LDS mother should be, and I am so happy you are the mother of my grandchildren. What a great family and I love you all.(you are also a great wife, and daughter-in-law.)

Isn't Conference wonderful? This was a great post, as always. That talk was a highlight. I love that you've never felt bad about your decision to stay home with your children--it really is the most important work you could do, and you do it well. I also love the blog makeover.

I am so bummed I missed most of it, dealing with sickness (mine and kids). Luckily we DVR'd it so I can go back and watch them. I especially excited to listen to Elder Ballard's talk.

Conference is just the best. I feel refreshed and ready to take on my week after this weekend. I too loved Elder Ballards talk. It's nice to have some validation every once in a while. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Your blog looks FABULOUS!! i love it!
Conference....uuhhh...not much watching happens around here. How do parents with children at home get any watching done....much less understanding and learning? I do much better with reading the talks later on.
Someday my kids will be a little older, calmer, patient, and reverent. When that day comes, I will enjoy conference again :)

I truly loved that talk and it meant so much to me to hear a personal address to every mother out there dealing with day to day life with children. Thank you for sharing your insight. Love the look of your new blog!

It's funny because it seemed like I only caught snippets of each talk due outside interferences (a.k.a. somewhat noisy children) but I did get to hear Elder Ballard's talk and was so grateful for it.

I also love the new look of your blog.

I loved Elder Ballard's talk, too. I think when you get your degree in teaching a part of you wants to be there doing that, but being home with your own kiddos is the most important thing! This talk is what I needed. I have been thinking about this topic a lot lately. I am glad we have the gospel to keep us focused on what matters most.
