My Little Tree Hugger!

Tuesday:
Kenley: "Mom, Friday I have to go to the Principal's Office."
Me: "Oh really, what for?"

Kenley: "Well, at school we use Styrofoam lunch trays and David T. is going to talk to Mrs. S about switching to something that doesn't take 500 years to disintegrate."

Elizabeth: "Oh my goodness Kenley, are you turning into a tree hugger?"

Me: "Styrofoam takes 500 years to disintegrate???? How did you become involved in this?"

Kenley: "Our class is given Styrofoam lunch trays everyday because we eat in our classroom and it's easier to throw them away than to go back to the lunchroom to take back reusable trays. David did some research and then we wrote a letter to Mrs. S. (Principal) She scheduled a meeting with us for Friday.

Friday:

Me: "How did the meeting with Mrs. S. go today?"

Kenley: "Mrs. S. said that when she read our letter, she was surprised. She is planning on talking to the lunch ladies and then she is going to meet with us next week. We came up with the idea of a recycling bin, but we need a parent volunteer to help with that."

Me: Thinking (Oh great, I wonder who is going to get that job?) "Oh, recycling them is a great idea."

Kenley: (After a long pause and thoughtful look.) "Mom, can you help take the Styrofoam to the recycling place."

Me: "Of course." (said with a genuine smile.)

I'm proud of you Kenley.

When you feel strongly about something,

you have to speak up, if it's a worthwhile cause.

This evening Elizabeth and Kenley put together their cute new bathroom cabinet from W.Mart. Styrofoam packaging everywhere.

This girl was not amused. Britton did his "little brother getting in the way trick."

Yeah for your tree hugger. You go girl. That is a very neat thing that she wanted to get involved like that and actually go something done about it too. It will put faith in her that things can work if you say something. I wish things were that easy out of the elementary school.

Love the new piece of furniture the girls got. And that what brothers are suppose to do. Annoy..

Way to go Kenley! It's fun to see change come because of your actions. Britton is too funny, but the cabinet looks cute too.

I love that you were so willing to help with the recycling. Great Job Deb. This is a really cute post. I love all the Styrofoam from the cabinet. That was funny! I'm impressed with the kids these days. They go for anything. That little Britton is adorable and I'm so very impressed that your girls put that cabinet together. So cool.

How wonderful that your little Kenley is developing a social conscience. I was up at my kids old elementary school in March working at the bookfair, and I saw the kids taking their lunches back to their rooms and was shocked to see them carrying those horrible foam trays. I thought exactly the same thing that Kenley and her friend thought. What a waste, just for convenience sake.

I'm not sure why but this post brought tears to my eyes.
One, because how did your little girls get so big and proactive and GREEN?
two, because she is RIGHT, we need to think about the future and do our part--however, i'm still using disposable diapers:)
three, because, despite all that you are doing, you will take the time to support her good cause--
