To Each His Own

When I started this blog, I was concerned that I'd never really have much to say. Well, I've put that fear to rest. I have a lot to say.

I like to think that I am a positive person, this post might just put that into question.

Recently, while sitting in Sacrament Meeting, I heard the dreaded words that I fear. I grew up participating in this recreational activity, but something happened and upon hearing these words, I feel a sinking feeling in my heart and a wave of fear.

"Ward Campout!!!"

My kids, on the other hand, practically jumped out of their seats and whispered excitedly to each other.
"Yeh, an activity where mom and dad
have to drag 5,000 lbs. of gear for an overnight stay
in a dirt pit."
Brent is an Eagle Scout and therefore, cannot utter any negative camping comments. He loves it.
I want to like camping.
I love being together as a family, I love nature:
but I also love cleanliness and a comfortable bed.
It wasn't even a question whether we would go or not. Of course we're going, for a few reasons.
1. Hang out with our awesome ward members and
2. My kids LOVE IT!!

So, it is with a little fear and a little, tiny bit of negativity that we embark on our overnight camping trip Friday evening. I'm going to have to bite my tongue if anyone acts up. I know exactly what I'll say,
"Quit it or we're going straight home." (YES!!!!)

See, I used to like camping.

(My brother, Paul, and I)

See "the orange bucket" behind me there? Any ideas what that was used for?

I know that I will return with pictures with some very happy children in them, it's all worth it.

Have a great weekend.

Fun pictures! Did you use the orange bucket to rinse your feet off before you stepped into the tent?

I am so in awe of your mum in a 2 piece. Who would have thought. Its something to talk about.

The orange bucket is a mystery. I love the pictures. I see a little bit of Kenley in you now. What great pictures Deb. I love them. I understand about the whole dirty thing and comfort thing. I hope you take lots of pictures and have a great time. I think my dad might go. Your kids will never forget this..

A couple of years ago I remember a talk that was given in sacrament meeting on Father's Day. This man related how his father took his family camping all the time through his growing up years. It wasn't until all the children were grown that they learned his dad hated camping! He only did it because his children loved it. I guess that we have to fake it sometimes. That would be me. Although, sometimes I'd rather be camping than in a gross hotel room.

You will have so much fun once you are there. It's the prep and clean up that toally bite. Your children, on the other hand, will have a blast through it all. Happy weekend to you!

mom is going to LOVE you for putting that picture up, haha. By the time I came around the whole camping fun thing had died down. Besides girls camp, which doesnt really count, the only time I have been camping is with you and Brent and that scarred me for life!

Just don't tell me that bucket was the "potty"!

I'm with you on the camping thing. My family loves it, and I like doing things that they love, but I like to be clean and have the opportunity to pee in a toilet not a hole.

I'm just sayin' ;)

That is so funny that you said you have "a sinking feeling in your heart and a wave of fear." I couldn't put a finger on the way I am feeling, but you summed it up for me!
Jason comes from a family that camps and camps and camps. I enjoy it too for the most part, but I've never been with a little girl named Lauren. I'm so afraid she'll hate sleeping in the tent and will scream all night keeping everyone awake! That is my fear, so therefore, my heart sinks everytime I think about the camping trip this weekend.
I love the pictures! I'm not sure about the orange bucket???

I'm with you. I loved camping until I was the mom and then all the work just kills it for me. Plus, the dirt, the chasing to keep a one year old out of the fire and out of the water and out of the bugs. . .you get the idea.
Have fun and make memories--your kids will never know anything but fun from it all :)

These are so funny! I love camping, I cheat the whole way, I eat tonz and party around the campfire until my kids start dozzing and then I pop a tylenol pm! Its all good! :) The best part of WARD campout is loudest tent of crying kids and yelling parents wins!

Oh how fun. Camping, it requires so much work, but eating smores in front of a fire make it all worth while.

Looks like Tharker and I were on the same page about the orange bucket. I was thinking could that possibly be a porta potty? If it is no wonder you don't like camping!
Last time I went on a ward campout we had a blast telling stories and sharing talents around the campfire and then my friend and I took our little kids and slept in her big van--only we didn't sleep too much. We had a blast watching movies and talking all night.
Anyway--good luck. I bet you will have a great time. I'll be thinking about you when I hear the lightening and thunder and it begins to pour down rain. Just kidding. (hopefully) Jera

LOL..I love the little head peeking out from under the chair in the last picture!

I am like you...not so thrilled about camping. Donald would love to go on family camping trips but he hasn't convinced me to do it yet. He is planning on taking the older girls sometime this summer.

Have fun....I will look forward to reading about your adventures!

I'm sure your kids will have a great time. I hate getting everything ready and cleaning everything when I get home. But the time spent, is well worth it. Have a great time, and I hope you don't get rained on! The orange bucket is a mystery!

When I was a kid we went camping all the time and I loved it. Now I realize how very naive I was. Nothing could get me on a camping trip. I hate being dirty. I hate sleeping in anything other than a nice pillow-top king sized bed. I hate not having a real bathroom. And call me a Negative Nelly, but the thought of everyone in my ward seeing what I look like when I get up from a night of basically no sleep? Sorry but NO. I'll wait and hear everyone else rave about it at the next Sacrament Meeting.
