quirky

The names have not been changed, we are completely guilty and proud of it.

The unusual, quirky things make me laugh. In the area of gift giving, I have to smile at how we go about it. While some guys give serious, deep thought to the gifts they give their significant other, with personal and romantic their topmost priority, I am the recipient of pure, simple practicality.

I tease Brent about it, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Around the first part of February, Brent bought himself a pack of twistable crayons. They are excellent scripture markers, and I commented how cool they were. So, guess what I got for Valentine's Day? Yep, twistable crayons, to mark my scriptures. He was sure to point out that he purchased the larger 18 pack for me.
Last week for our anniversary I got this large Costco pack of white washcloths. I really needed them and love them, which is an important part of any well received gift.

I Ok'ed this post with Mr. Romance before writing it. He laughed and said,
"I really like my gold toenail clippers you got me for Valentine's a few years ago."
I guess we're both guilty.

So, what's gift giving like at your house?

Lavishly Romantic or just plain practical?

For Valentines Day one year I took David's car and got an oil change. I dont think I am too romantic, but David always gets me the most thoughtful gifts!

For my birthday one year, Spencer gave me a spice rack and a cutting board. I wasn't very happy about the gift at the time, but looking back I have changed my mind. It was actually very thoughtful. I needed both of them, and still use both to this day.

A couple of years ago, I got a large griddle for Mother's Day. I was SO thrilled! I still love that thing.

Joe and I splurged and bought a propane grill for Valentines. Pretty practical in the sense that we wanted to start barbequing.

I think we fall under the practical and the some what romantic. It is a nice balance of the two.

This post made me smile. We used to make fun of my mom for asking for practical gifts for Christmas and birthdays (we had fun trying to giftwrap her new mop for Christmas). Now I'm guilty of the same. We try to balance between the practical and romantic/fun gifts, but I'm sure we lean more towards practical. For mother's day Matt gave me a scanner/copier/printer and commented that it was a wierd mother's day gift, but I loved it and it was just what I wanted!

I received a fishing pole (sturgeon) for my birthday once from Ed. It was mostly for him. Yes. We are practical. Once he did surprise me with something really super.

Brad got me my Dyson for one of our anniversaries and I loved it!!! I think we depend from occasion to occasion.

Mick and I are practical gift givers too. Although for our anniversaries, we decided instead of buying gifts for eachother, we'd create memories. Which we thought was a great idea - but only really did it for our first (we went to the Cranberries concert at the Gorge...AWESOME!). We went back to being practical (the addition of kids kind of helped us with that). Which I'm totally cool with.

we're pretty practical and i enjoy that, sometimes i tell him what i want and then he will get it for a holiday--nice huh?
such as my mp3clip that i love.

but, randomly, he will show up at home with roses or ice cream. he is probably much more romantic than me--lovely.

Totally practical! Except my Ipod. It was a total surprise and I'm sure he could have used the money for other things, but I LOVE my Ipod.

About 8 years ago I got Jack a drill for V-Day. He loved it and still uses it to this day. We are more on the practical side. Sometimes we don't even exchange gifts. Crazy, huh? But that's how it goes sometimes.

I think we fall in the middle. Not really practical, not really romantic, just fun. Like stuff we wouldn't normally buy, like movies and CD's and stuff. I loved this post!

After thirty one years of marriage Don and I have developed a perfect system. We get what we want for ourselves and then sometime over the course of the next week we will casually mention, "oh by the way that new blah, blah, blah, I got that for me for Mother's Day. Now I realize that probably sounds pretty cynical and unromantic but you see the catch is that the other one can't complain because after all it was Mother's Day. I guess that is the real gift.
Oh a P.S. though. My Birthday is Friday and when Don asked me what I want and I told him a new big TV for our bedroom. He actually didn't say no like he has every other time in the last few years on non-birthday type times when I have told him I want one. So we shall see. Uh, sorry for the novel.

Chad is very practicle, but he has figured out that I appreciate the more romantic gifts, so last Christmas, he knew that I (we) needed a new vacuum, so he gave it to me a few days before Christmas so it wouldn't seem so practicle...I guess. He usually has my mom pick out things and then pays my mom for the gifts. I think that is pretty thoughtful.

hmmm Scott and the kids got me a PS2 for my birthday once because they all knew I hated game systems and they gave it to me while people were here for cake so I couldn't get mad at them. v-day and anniv. are pretty sad when practical gets you all excited!

Practical is the best gift to me! Flowers and chocolates are always nice, but they wilt and the sweets always disappear with feelings of guilt. Now, a stack of new dish cloths? Awesome, useful, and totally thoughtful... therefore romantic. See the connection here?
